Is there ever a “slow season” with licensing? I feel like I keep telling people it’s my busy season… but it never officially slows down. I’ll admit, there are a lot some days that creativeness just ain’t happening and I can tell from the moment I get out of bed. There’ll be a HUGE to-do list waiting for me and I just cannot focus… so instead I get groceries, spend hours on Pintrest, see who has repinned my pins, look at clothes online, decide what I want my “look” to be this winter, figure out how I should decorate my future house, decide I need new boots and where I can get them for a good price, ya know… generally avoid doing anything really productive.

Speaking of not getting stuff done, I’m busy painting my nails… BUT this is part of my work I swear! Uh… I mean… according to my new discovery. I had a conversation with a friend which led to a realization, and I wanted to share it with you. So, ladies, go paint your nails while you’re at work and when your boss says, “shouldn’t you be working?”, you can safely say, “I am so step off.”

My friend asked me why my nails were painted dark blue, my response was “cause I like the color duh” but in the midst of discussing our favorite colors, I had an epiphany. It’s very simple. I use nail polish to alter my mood.

Who doesn’t, right?

But really… I figured out that when I need to develop, color or create a design I am unknowingly using nail polish to get my creative juices flowing. I think it’s actually kind of interesting… have you ever thought that changing your nail color can change your mind set? I usually just think I need something pretty on my nails… but to realize that it affects my way of thinking is kind of crazy. But it works.

I relate certain colors to certain mind sets. I have some examples that I’ve identified, and now I can actually get my work done a little faster because I can choose a certain color for my nails and magically the creative juices start flowing! PLUS you get a little peek into some things I’ve been working on for the shows in January. (That’s right, show season is in January so I’m S.T.R.E.S.S.E.D. where’smynailpolish…..)

I decided I wanted to create home decor and kitchen items with my Moroccan Muse pattern, so I wanted to change the color palette to something more appropriate (if you saw it before it was gold, pink, brown, purple, etc… not really “let me decorate my kitchen with this” type colors). I grew my nails a little longer and painted them red, which in turn made me get into a sophisticated, decorate-my-home, my-husband-will-love-this mode. I felt older, sophisticated, like I have a big house, the time & money to get manicures, and it reminds me of my Mom (her nails were always red). I also think of 50’s housewife ads, I think they always had red nails… so maybe that has something to do with it.

Regardless, here’s some work that came from me having red nails….

I did something similar for recoloring my Feathered Peacock patterns. I wanted to feel young, careless, summery, like I was in my late teens early 20’s… so I chose coral and cut my nails to about mid length.

And the resulting work….

And lastly… I was working on my NEW Haute Wine girls, they’re amazing by the way, and I needed to feel confident, fashiony, sure of myself, defined, artsy and basically like a total badass… so I went with short dark blue nails! I think black is overdone, so I go with dark blue. They almost look black but then it’s like a surprise when they catch the light and you realize it’s blue… It’s pretty awesome.

And as a result of my badassness…

I’m telling you, it works. Try it. NOW! I’m almost out of nail polish remover and now I’m obsessed with finding new nail polish colors to try… Any suggestions?

Ok, so I’m not really a doctor… but I have folders like them!! Well…I do now.

So there’s a couple of things I should tell you before delving into this… I inherited a terrible disease from my mother, who got it from my Grandma and she probably got it from her mom too. I. write. lists. Lists of lists. And lists of lists of lists. I keep [no joke] 5 post-it pads on my desk at all times in all colors because there are different levels of importance to my notes. PLUS, they aren’t the small 2×2 normal post-its. They’re 4×4, “super sticky” and they have ruled lines. I also have 4 letter size notepads on my desk, each with a mashup of notes/schedules/ideas/etc. Obviously I write ALOT of stuff down. I constantly think of ideas and jot them down and stick it somewhere on my desk, which always winds up looking like a disaster. And, here comes the pertinent part, I lose them! And I can always remember exactly when I wrote it, what color post-it I wrote on but NOT what I wrote! Hence the below post!

I needed a solution. A way to keep my ever growing ideas, lists and notes together with the things that were actually pertinent to the ideas, lists and/or notes. Oh, the other thing I meant to tell you… I am THE most organized artist I’ve EVER come across. So yeah I’m OCD about being organized, but it’s the ONLY way I can think straight. I literally have to clean my desk when it’s a mess because I won’t be able to think creatively or get anything done. And I’m also a problem solver. If there’s a problem, I can probably find a solution or fix it. Even if it’s like, the dvd player isn’t working, Dr. Lezlee can fix it. Seriously, ask my friends. I believe one of my friends compared me to MacGyver recently, if that gives you any idea as to how problem solvy I am. Ok, on to the “Dr. Folders”.

Ok, so seriously, have you ever noticed the folders they have in Dr’s offices? They have those metal tabs on top to add new information about the patient each time it’s needed. AND, come to find out, those folders are available with partitions, so inside ONE folder you can have 3 different sections, or 6 surfaces to add new information to. THIS.IS.PERFECT. I think I cried a little when I saw these online at an office supply store. Well, I immediately ordered two boxes (two different colors of course because I decided to have two “types” of folders). Blue=Collections (licensing) Red=Jobs (mostly graphic design based stuff) This is my FIRST blue folder :) I haven’t labeled it yet, but you better believe I’m doin’ it asap, but for now I’ll just tell you that this is the Haute Wine folder.

I even came up with a formula as to what all the partitions are for… that’s how bad this disease is.

First, once you flip open the folder, the first thing you’ll see is the “final collection” section on the left, basically what the final version of the collection turned out looking like and what I’m selling currently. On the right are notes regarding the collection, or ideas and, in this case, sayings that I’ve come up with accompany the girls.

Next, flip the first partition and you’ll see the “variations” of the collection on the left, so anytime I make color changes or new characters that belong in the same collection, this is where they’ll go. And that happens ALOT. On the left side is the “presentation” section, for any presentation that has used the Haute Wine collection a reference sheet will go here. This way I can keep track of what has/has not been shown.

Are you disgusted yet? I’m.in.heaven.

And lastly, by flipping the last partition you’ll reach the “contract” section, which may not be empty for long ;). When a contract is written involving the collection I will put a copy here for keeps. For now I’ve put the original drawings back here since they’re huge and I need them to stay towards the back! Cause I’m OCD like that.

Now, I’m going to put all these in hanging folders next to my desk so I will always have access to them. I LOVE organizing!!!!! I’d spend a whole day overhauling the office to put everything in my “Dr. Folders” but I can’t, so with each job I touch or assignment I mark off my list I’ll create it’s respective folder and file it away. Bad news, I’ve already figured out like 2 other colors of folders I’ll need to buy… but am holding off [clenching teeth]

One reason that I began art licensing is because I wanted to make things that Lezlee Elliott wanted to buy. I am funny, sarcastic, creative, emotional, impatient, and not too girlish but girlish enough to giggle at girly things. And it’s DIFFICULT to find things that I like. I feel like I’m always searching for something different than what’s out there and I can never find what I want. So I started making those things I was looking for.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a few great artists that have shown up (Mary Phillips, Anne Taintor, and Simon+Kabuki to name a few ), and make awesome stuff that I want to buy but generally it’s still a struggle.

Greeting cards… Ugh… I. am. not. mushy. I am emotional. But not mushy…get it right. I just attended a bridal shower for my BFF, literally yesterday, and I did not want to hand her a card that says “Congrats!” [eye roll] I feel like she’d just think I grabbed it off the shelf and settled. Instead I managed to find a card where the groom is grabbing the “buns” of the bride! What’s EVEN BETTER is that we were out the night before the bridal shower and the groom-to-be ACTUALLY grabbed her butt right in front of me! I died laughing and said, “you’ll know tomorrow!” And of course when she saw the card she laughed, so don’t you see how that absolutely fits perfectly?? That’s just the type of person I am, and my friends know that and I think they expect to receive cards that feel like, “Yeah… that’s from Lezlee alright.”

Anyhow, I started making some Haute Wine girls last year and came up with funny little sayings to accompany them. And now, I’m basically a full fledged greeting card maker with these ladies. I have come up with a whole line of birthday, Halloween and Christmas cards with my Haute Wine ladies that we’re presenting to manufacturers currently!!!!! And I love them so I wanted to share a couple… just a couple though! And I’ll be sure to let you know when they get picked up and in stores ;)

And of course you should know, these girls all started as representations of me and my best friends. :) So when planning my BFF’s bachelorette party… I HAD to use the girl I had created for her!!! DUH!

She literally almost fell over when she saw it… :) That means it was PER.FECT. Love it ;)
